Windows XP Freeze
Well, I am writing this blog to help all those people who encountered way too random XP freezes with their machines. Everything started a week ago for me.
My computer was working fine the day before I made the fatal decision of re-installing windows XP. I had the Win XP SP2 CD with me. I usually re-install OS every 6-8 months(probably because I tamper with it a lot). But this time, I did not know that I would have a torrid time for at least a week. Well, re-installing Win XP four times in a row in four days would explain the horrid time I had.
My computer is a 6 months old Del Latitude D530. When I re-installed OS for the first time, everything looked fine to me. Since I had Win XP SP2, I had to install all the requisite windows update. I installed all other necessary softwares. Then came the trouble for me. My XP started to freeze infrequently for no reaosns. I tried all my best. At office, it would freeze right in between my code.
I believed it to be an installation issue and re-installed OS, again with all the XP updates. The nexy day, the same problem came. This time I called the DELL Support center and told them my problem. They ran all the diagnostics(tool around 4 hours of my wokr time) and could not find anything. They just gave up saying it is a software issue for which they would need to do further debugging.
Then I sa a solution where one of the guys was saying to change the Pwoer management to Standard PC from windows ACPI(I have no clu what it is). I did that and it worked for me for the rest of the day. But when I restarted my computer , all my drivers got busted and my computer started to behace as it was a 640*480 machine. It wont allow me to do anything. I again re-installed.
The issue surfaces again the next day. I had no other choice but to live with it for the nex two working days as I had already spent a lot of time on it. Then today, friday night, something struck me. My laptop has not hardware issues. The only thing different between a working XP prior to my windows re-installation and the new one was Windows XP SP3 patch.
I decided to uninstall the same and try my luck. You wont believe it. I have tested my Windows heavily with all softwares running and it hass not yet crashed. I now believe that SP3 was the reason for my infrequent freezes and I really hope that my belief is right, not only for me but also for others who are facing this irritating Win XP freezes.
Hope this helped some guy his time and money
